The Original Post-Modern Yurt Kit.
The Mongolian Ger, commonly known today as a yurt, was developed more than 2,500 years ago in Central Asia as portable shelter for nomadic peoples. It was, and remains, a brilliant, functional design: beautiful, modular, secure shelter that can move with the rhythms of life.
Prismatic Yurt Co. is a Maine-based company bringing this enduring technology into the present through a modern, lightweight, portable yurt kit. Drawing inspiration from Bill Coperthwaite’s experimental interpretations of the form, our design-build team has created the V1 Popup Yurt: a thoughtful new expression of an ancient design.
Every Prismatic Yurt is handmade with care, using high-quality natural and sustainable materials selected for their beauty, durability, and relationship to place. We source locally whenever possible, including locally milled, cured, and produced white ash for the structural elements of each yurt. From the wood frame to the waxed-canvas exterior, each kit is made entirely without synthetic materials and built from the ground up with lasting function in mind. No corners are cut in the materials, construction, or attention given to each piece.
We believe shelter should be beautiful, durable, functional, and made to truly hold the life that happens within it. Our base kit has a 13-foot base diameter and a 16-foot shoulder diameter. Built around a 3-foot center ring, it includes everything needed to set up a weather-ready shelter in as little as half an hour with a team of two: the compression ring, tension cable, lattice, rafters, canvas walls and roof, and several dome and door configurations. The full kit folds down easily to fit in the back of a midsize SUV or truck bed.
The V1 prototype is currently in production and is anticipated to field test at Luna Burn in July 2026. This next stage will bring the design into real-world conditions as we continue refining the system and prepare for production.
